Biography:

In addition to my experience as an arts administrator and university instructor, I have been a studio artist for 35 years. I now work primarily with fiber techniques on paper and batik surface designs. My educational background includes a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute; an MA in fine art, and an Education Specialist degree from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. I conduct slide lectures, professional presentations, and business seminars at arts-related regional, national and international conferences and conventions. I am an independent educator/curator teaching hands-on paper batik workshops at art schools and universities throughout the year. I have researched and written a series of lectures concentrating on Artists-In-Business and Creative Journeys. They augment the educational programming for my traveling exhibition of 19 framed paper batik quilts titled, Transilations.

Currently, I am immersed in product development and designing for industry. I create limited editions of blank note cards, all sewn and embellished inside and out. They are marketed as "Write Arounds" due to the embellishments. They are found in galleries, museum gift shops, and at my workshops and speaking engagements. Digital images of my surface designs are sent to design firms, manufacturers, art representatives for licensing in the domestic market.

Artist Statement:

"Paper batik allows total immersion in a lifetime of fascination with color and pattern. The wax resist technique on paper embodies the addictive qualities of spontaneity, instant results, color control, and brilliance not afforded by the traditional fabric batik process. The tedious techniques of piecing, stitching and beading are comfortable, but transferring these methods successfully to paper has been an exciting challenge. There is some absurdity in tedious beading of paper...and I am still thinking about it. I started making batik yardages and fabric art quilts in 1972. Although this new work feels "full circle", it is also very fresh and exhilarating for me. I use my Mother's marbled papers to soften and compliment my batik papers in the larger quilts. This is a very special collaboration that touches my heart deeply everyday. Lastly, it is simply delightful to work with a cacophony of color and pattern. Paper batik touches a cord of visual and spiritual truth, telling me I am doing exactly what I should."
