(Raku for You)
“For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the possibilities of designing and creating objects of clothing. As a little girl, I believed that my dolls were not intended to stimulate my maternal instincts, but were, instead, models for the fitting and displaying of new clothes. As an artist I began working in fibers by weaving garments and creating wearable art objects.
Now that I am teaching art primarily in the clay studio, I have naturally extended this interest by creating a variety of draped garments on hand-sculpted statuettes. The earliest of these forms reminded me of some of Salvadore Dali's female forms, so I called these sculptures the "Dali Girls". The Winged Spirits have less dramatic robes, but are adorned with widely spread wings which represent the over-arching guidance and protection which I feel we all receive from the Spirit within us.
Each of these sculptures is an individual artistic experience for me, since no molds or patterns are used in their construction. All are made without any details in the face, so each person who beholds them can imagine the face, and see whomever they wish in the form. I recently sold a large Winged Spirit to one lady who planned to display it as the Angel of her recently departed mother. I hope these forms might bring such unique pleasure in your life as well.”
