(Creek Ferry Pottery)
Susan DeMay produces functional and decorative stoneware pottery and other artistic forms, such as wall works, sculptural vases, and tile projects.
Susan operates a studio in Smithville, Tennessee and employs help of a partner and a number of part-time assistants. All clay works use colorful glazes with a variety of surfaces, put together to create a rich, expressive palette and distinctive designs. Each series of work has evolved from many years of working with electric kilns fired to pyrometric cone six.
An assortment of glazing techniques--dipping, pouring and brush work--in concert with masking and wax-resisting create a variety of visual effects, motifs, and narrative images, all of which are embellishing forms derived basically from functional prototypes. Abstractions, repeated patterns, and storybook narratives reveal many sources of inspiration: modern paintings inspire color schemes and balanced compositions; quilts inspire specific designs and rich color combinations; blown glass inspires decorative shapes and fluid surfaces; nature inspires intriguing effects; and personal experiences inspire colorful messages that can point to social issues.
Susan DeMay's art pottery is renowned, both regionally and nationally. It has been seen in the nation's capitol, and in numerous museum shops in the Southeast.
